Open letter from Gerry Sutcliffe to Chiefs and Chairs of Probation Boards in England and Wales

This letter highlights the vital importance of the probation service to public protection, recognises the professionalism of probation staff and summarises the record sums invested in this sector.  It points out that we have still not managed to make a sufficient impact on reducing crime.

Legislation is proposed that will enable all of those who have the right skills and expertise to be able to make a contribution to the management of offenders, whether they are from the public, private or third sectors. This will transfer the statutory duty to make arrangements for the provision of probation services from the 42 local probation boards to the Secretary of State.  The letter sets out six guarantees which demonstrate a full commitment to a strong public sector probation service.
